Coaching Soccer |
I have always watched and played soccer, be it either recreationally or competitively. I love the sport and try to be involved in it as much as I can. I follow several clubs throughout Europe and support them fanatically as many who know me would attest to.
Even though I always played and watched it, another aspect of soccer had always appealed to me that I had never tried, and that is coaching. I felt that because of my relatively young age, I would not be seen as experienced enough to coach a team. However, when I arrived in Canada several months ago, and met a few of my friends there, they pointed me in the direction of coaching a kids team.
Due to having a few contacts, I managed to get a volunteer job assistant coaching an under 10 girls soccer team and I can tell you now it was one of the best decisions I have ever made. At the start of the season, the girls were getting beaten in every game. They would lose 9-0 or worse and things were not looking fantastic. However, once we were able to get down to coaching them and teaching them the basics, things started to improve.
Because it was a volunteer position, I was not getting paid, however, it was a very rewarding process and I was doing it out of love for the game. I would very happily do it again. There is nothing more rewarding than noticing when the girls did something you taught them, or simply improved overall because of your coaching.
By the end of the indoor season, the team had captured a silver medal in a regional tournament and finished in third place, getting a bronze medal for their troubles, in the league. From where we started, we had certainly come a long, long way. It was a fantastic experience, working with some great people and I would love to do it again.
The payment has finally come through for that last copywriting job that I did, you all know what that means, it’s about time to hit the store and pick up that new pair of asics running shoes that I have been waiting to get. Philip, are you up for a treck into London this weekend?
