Try to stay calm when you are a new parent

When we first have a new child we are filled with so many emotions. As a parent there are many mistakes that you will make along the way. No child comes with a manual and sometimes it is hit or miss when it comes to dealing with certain situations. It is normal for parents to sometimes think that they have no idea whatsoever what their child wants; but don’t go running to get paternity testing just yet. All parents can’t figure out their child at some point, and there are very common mistakes that all new parents make. Just being aware of the big ones helps you avoid feeling like you don’t know your own baby.

A typical first time parent mistake is not allowing the baby to cry. For some reason we are wired to thing that we should stop the baby’s crying. That something is wrong and we need to fix it immediately. We can get flustered very quickly if all of our attempts to sooth the baby fail. Sometimes babies just cry. It does not mean that you are doing anything wrong. It just means that they are crying. If you have tried everything and the baby is still crying it may just need to get some sleep. If it cries all the time something may be wrong and you may want to call your doctor.

Another common mistake is panicking or freaking out over every little thing. Some parents will trample over any and everything to get to their baby if they hear them cough. Sometimes new parents think about the worst case scenarios. They can turn a simple cough into something much more serious in their mind. Sometimes a cough is just a cough. It doesn’t mean they are choking, have a cold, or the flu. You may just need to step back and think logically sometimes.

Confusing vomit and spit up is another common mistake new parents make. They are not the same thing. They do not happen for the same reason. Babies sometimes spit up a little bit when they burp after eating. This does not mean that they are sick or have caught something. Sometimes it may just be that the milk is at the top of their stomach. Make sure to know that it truly is vomit before calling your doctor in hysterics and working yourself up. Just try to think logically when it comes to your kids and react appropriately and everything should be fine.
